Petrified Wood Collection
Petrified wood is created when trees, branches or roots are buried in mud or sand, preventing air from reaching them and slowing down the natural decomposition process. Over time, silica in solution percolates down through the overburden, gradually replacing the organic material with silica, thus preserving the general shape and appearance of the wood as very hard, dense stone. Different colors present in the petrified wood come from different trace minerals present during the replacement process.
